I greatly enjoye this book, research very thorough. I kept reading it night after night until finished. As anyone who stopped to think before purchasing (i.e. not me) would've realized, it's pretty much impossible to write a history of the entirety of philosophy that does real justice to all of the philosophers discussed. In order to keep the book (volume one of God knows how many, this one on the Greeks) at a reasonable length, Adamson has only a few pages to give each chapter. The result is, unsurprisingly, superficial--but instead of trying to compensate for the superficiality by engaging thoughtfully with a representative selection of issues central to each philosopher's work, Adamson embraces it. This book reminds me of my freshman philosophy class, and given Adamson's academic background, I suspect that's exactly the audience he has in mind. He's writing for readers whose interest in philosophy is shaky and needs to be enticed with lots of contemporary analogies and jokes. The goal seems to be to distill each philosopher/theme to a few salient takeaways: bullet points that students can use to pass an exam without actually having to think. But what's the point of reading philosophy, then? This approach is particularly problematic for Classical philosophy, which relies heavily on the extended conversation between author and reader. Recapping particular arguments of Plato or Aristotle bullet-point style does nothing to convey the essence of what they actually cared most about, which was teaching people how to think--not convincing them of a specific (and inevitably, in retrospect, crackpot) theory about the origins of the universe. This book does provide accurate historical context, but that part is very easy to find elsewhere. "Classical Philosophy" is not cheap; glib packaging aside (and it's incredibly glib: chapter titles include "Ain't No Sunshine: Plato's Cave Allegory" and "Old Man River": Heraclitus), there's really nothing here you can't get from googling each of the philosophers in question and reading the first 2 or 3 result pages that look respectable. If you want a hard copy, there's no shortage of books that cover Classical philosophy available for 1 cent + shipping; most are more thoughtful than this. 2 stars for accuracy. For what it is, you could do worse. WOW! I flew through this book. The first book in the series I loved also but I found myself frustrated with the choices made by both Lincoln and Kali. But the author also makes you understand that there is so much more of the story to tell. We got a lot more in this one with a few surprises! Both Kali and Lincoln are slowly opening up yet still scared of getting hurt. Kali is finally letting her protective barrier down and their friendship is honest, warm and real. The story Charlene tells is sad, yet heartwarming and very well thought of. She doesn't jump the story quickly and unnaturally. I find that especially with Theo. He doesn't suddenly just start talking one day and then doesn't stop. He is still scared. You get the feeling this book was very well researched and thought out. I was very impressed and highly recommend this book. I find Charlene's character development better than other authors. She doesn't speed through details or history. It is so real and honest that I felt they were my friends and I can't wait to find out what happens next yet am also sad there are only three books!! I received an advance copy in exchange for my honest review. Book was dirty and bend up When I read the original, I knew I was reading a classic. I thought, wow, great work, brilliant and interesting writing, I now know what I need to win my own lawsuit, but what more could be said on the topic? I was wrong. Dead wrong. Evan Aidman updates this classic work with relevant and pertinent information for todays fast moving world. If you want to win your personal injury claim, or, if you are just in the mood for a great absorbent read, buy this book.
